Exploring Puerto Plata’s coastline has been a delightful experience, especially since it’s easy to find free beachfront access that allows for leisurely days soaking up the sun. While I initially thought spending time at Cosita Rica and Playa del Pueblito would offer a true slice of paradise, I was met with murky waters and substantial seaweed a bit disappointing, to say the least. Even at Taino Bay just a short walk away from Cosita Rica I realized that not all beaches are created equal.

I discovered that many vibrant local spots line the coast, where friendly vendors offer delicious snacks while children play in clearer waters nearby. Although Puerto Plata may have had some misses regarding specific beaches, venturing off the beaten path opened my eyes to stunning coastal views without paying a dime.

Historic Puerto Plata

Wandering through the historic district of Puerto Plata feels like stepping back in time, and the best part, It’s completely free. Strolling along the picturesque Paseo Dona Blanca, I found myself enchanted by its charming pink alleyways, which offer a delightful backdrop for photos. 

Nearby, Parque Central buzzes with life as locals gather amidst colonial-inspired architecture. The stunning St. Philip the Apostle Cathedral stands proudly nearby it’s awe-inspiring to witness such historical beauty without paying a single peso.

Ambar Museum

As I wandered through the vibrant streets of Puerto Plata, I stumbled upon the Ambar Museum, which may be a bit much to call this place a museum; it feels more like a fancy gift shop of a free activity. Nestled close to historic Central Park, the charming space instantly drew me in with its warm ambiance and stunning amber displays. 

The jewelry pieces glimmered under soft lighting, showcasing nature’s artistry sealed within million-year-old resin. When I ventured into the small museum area, I was greeted by an enthusiastic guide who shared captivating stories about amber mining in this region stories that breathed life into those ancient trinkets around me.

Fortaleza de San Felipe Fortress

As I approached the Fortaleza de San Felipe, history lovers will relish exploring this site, a true testament to Puerto Plata’s rich heritage. The panoramic view from the fortress is absolutely breathtaking, you can see colorful ships gliding in and out of Taino Bay.

Wandering through its outer grounds is completely free and I was delighted to discover that entering the fortress only costs $2 per person. This small fee felt like an absolute steal for an attraction steeped in so much history. Less than 1 mile away from Taino Bay, this historic gem provides a compelling reason to stretch your legs with a lovely walk while immersing yourself in the beauty that surrounds it.

Damajagua Falls

When I first heard about Damajagua Falls, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring one of Puerto Plata’s most popular excursions. The allure of cascading waterfalls, lush greenery, and the thrill of natural water slides drew me in. 

I quickly realized that this isn’t just a leisurely stroll through nature; it requires a good level of fitness to truly enjoy everything this beautiful site has to offer. There’s an exhilarating sense of camaraderie among fellow adventurers as we tackled the steep hikes together, some moments pushing my physical limits but ultimately rewarding me with breathtaking views.

MonkeyLand

Visiting MonkeyLand for the first time was one of the highlights of my trip to Puerto Plata. There’s something incredibly heartwarming about playing with friendly squirrel monkeys in such a vibrant tropical setting, their playful antics and curious nature make you feel instantly at ease. 

While it’s located about 9.8 miles from the cruise ports, which can take anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic, I found every second spent in transit worth it once I arrived.

For those docking at Taino Bay and looking to save on transportation or excursions, consider visiting Monkey Island instead. For just $25 per person, you can engage with charming wildlife right at the port although smaller than MonkeyLand, it’s certainly an easier option that still offers delightful moments with these furry creatures.

Taxis in Puerto Plata

Taking a taxi for our 2024 trip to Puerto Plata felt like starting an adventure. Our helpful driver customized our trip, suggesting hidden treasures not found in guidebooks. 

The round trip to Damajagua Falls from the cruise port cost $120 for five of us, which was a great deal for such a packed day. As we drove through colorful streets with colonial buildings, my excitement grew with every turn.

Amber Cove Cruise Port vs St Kitts Cruise Port

Walking through its cobblestone streets, I discovered charming colonial buildings and a wealth of history and culture often overlooked due to Amber Cove’s modern appeal. Stepping off the cruise ship at Amber Cove in Puerto Plata feels like entering a colorful postcard. 

The lush landscape is filled with vibrant local shops, and I am immediately drawn to the friendly smiles of the locals. As I walk along the waterfront, I hear calypso music in the air, sparking my sense of adventure.

The St Kitts Cruise Port itself is a beautiful blend of history and modernity, draped in colorful shops and local art stalls, inviting me to explore its hidden gems. 

Just beyond the bustling marketplace lies an enchanting trail that leads to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park an incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking lush landscapes and azure waters. Climbing to its bastions felt like walking through history, with every step revealing stories of colonial conquest and resilience.
